The sub-modus “true confidence”: varieties and means of expression in I.A. Bunin's novel “The life of Arseniev''”

The article deals with revealing the semic composition of markers of the sub-modus “true confidence” in the modal estimate authenticity and conditions of their functioning in I.A. Bunin's novel “The Life of Arseniev”. The markers of this sub-modus in the novel are parenthetic constructions v samom dele (meaning “really”), verno (“truly”), deistvitelno (“indeed”), konechno (“surely”), nesomnenno (“undoubtedly”), ponyatno (“naturally”), pravda (“true”), razumeetsia (“of course”), sledovatelno (“therefore”) and the lexemes povtoryayu (“(I) repeat”), pomnyu, pomnitsya (“remember”), polagayu (“(I) suppose”), dumayu (“(I) think”). The most productive in functioning and most extensive in its semic composition is the lexeme konechno (“certainly”), in the content structure of which the presence of the seme “categoricalness” makes up the basis of inflexibility in objectivity of modal estimate. A range of grounds for its functioning is rather wide and includes a series of those inherent only in this lexeme (love for the motherland, knowledge of the city history, social conditions, attitude to the situation, expectation of the unusual) and do not determine vital activity of the other parenthetic modal constructions. Knowledge of different nature is reflected in the manifestation of a series of modifiers. Constructions with the semantics of the information source hold a high position in the acquired information estimation.
