The paper compares Russian and Czech versions of Gogol's "St. John's Eve" in order to identify the characteristics of the transmission of national color using sub-prime and colloquial vocabulary. A comparison showed that translators prefer to use the neutral language, so as not to complicate the perception of the Czech reader, but complete recovery from the subprime vocabulary does not happen, because it is an important link in the transmission cultural and national information.
