Introduction: forensic handwriting expertise is of great importance in law enforcement practice. Data from the official accounts of forensic institutions of the Russian Federation indicate a tendency to the increase of materials for forensic handwriting expertise, which is associated with an increase in the document circulation in the country and a high level of its involvement in the criminal sphere of public life. In this regard, the authors of the work set the goal to determine the current state and directions for the further development of forensic handwriting expertise in the Russian Federation. Methods: the methodological basis of the study is represented with the methods of scientific knowledge, including the methods of historicism, system, observation, comparison, analysis, synthesis, analogy, study of expert practice, etc. Results: the author’s position is based on the opinion of a competent scientific environment, a survey on topical issues of theory and methodology of forensic handwriting expertise, organization and tactics of using its results in law enforcement. Conclusions: The current state of forensic handwriting expertise in the Russian Federation allows solving a wide range of identification and diagnostic problems. However, increasing the effectiveness of its use requires further development in separate areas, such as theoretical, experimental, methodical, organizational-tactical, administrative, material and technical, international, etc.
