The court fine in criminal law is one of the most complex and contradictory phenomena, which has not yet received an unambiguous legal assessment in the domestic scientific community. The article attempts to comprehend the socio-legal essence of this measure of a criminal nature through the establishment of its functional purpose. As a result of studying domestic and foreign legislative experience, it is concluded that a court fine is a compensatory measure that is designed to provide compensation for material and moral harm, primarily to victims of crime, for which it is necessary to create a state fund for victims.
