Suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia with metabolic syndrome

The purpose of this study was to identify the connection between a history of suicidal behavior, hopelessness and the presence of the metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia. Materials: 150 patients with schizophrenia getting treatment in the Tomsk Regional Mental Hospital were examined. The patients included in the sample received antipsychotic therapy for 6 weeks. To identify the metabolic syndrome (MS), blood pressure, waist circumference, a number of biochemical parameters (glucose, triacylglyceride, high-density lipoproteins) were measured. Interpretation of the data obtained was carried out using the IDF (International Diabetes Association) criteria for verification of MS.
