The purpose of this study was to identify the connection between a history of suicidal behavior, hopelessness and the presence of the metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia. Materials: 150 patients with schizophrenia getting treatment in the Tomsk Regional Mental Hospital were examined. The patients included in the sample received antipsychotic therapy for 6 weeks. To identify the metabolic syndrome (MS), blood pressure, waist circumference, a number of biochemical parameters (glucose, triacylglyceride, high-density lipoproteins) were measured. Interpretation of the data obtained was carried out using the IDF (International Diabetes Association) criteria for verification of MS. Based on the presence or absence of concomitant MS, the subjects were divided into two groups: with MS and without MS. Both groups were compared with each other in terms of frequency of parasuicidal behavior, level of hopelessness, and a number of clinical and socio-demographic characteristics...
