Suicidological terminology in scientific research and clinical practice. Part I

Consistent definitions and terms are useful in clinical and research work. This multi-part review presents the background, rationale, and methodology for the development and implementation of a nomenclature for selfharm (SHB) involving the assessment of intent. Unifying terms for SH and suicidal behavior (SB) as part of its continuum are proposed. The historical context highlights controversial and confusing terms and definitions; efforts to improve the ability to clearly and confidently report SB elements in key prevention issues; and next steps in the process of developing and implementing a standardized nomenclature and classification system in the field of suicidology.
