The article analysis the main directions of the formation and the development of the theory of import substitution. It is systematized different approaches to the interpretation of the category «import subs-titution» of russian and foreign economists, established distinctive features of the process of import substitution. Based on the analysis it is formulated own definition of a import substitution.
