The review provides a critical overview of the most complete to date bio-bibliographic index dedicated to the life and work of Vasily N. Orel, who was the founder of the Kuban literary local history. After the creators and publishers of the new handbook the author of the review tries to determine the place and role of the researcher in the revival of the South-Russian regional studies of the late 1950s - early 1960s.
