The article is devoted to the consideration of the institution of secrecy, which unites legal relations on the establishment of a special legal regime for access to information, the disclosure of which may lead to negative consequences for persons involved in criminal proceedings, in particular with regard to victims and witnesses. In the article, the mystery, from the point of view of etymology, of the general legal and criminal procedural significance is step by step interpreted. Specific legal norms are analyzed that reveal the essence and significance of the legal institution of secrecy used by the Legislature. The analysis of the norms of the criminal procedural law regulating the grounds, conditions and procedure for ensuring the safety of the participants in the criminal case is given. Based on the results of legal research, their own conclusions are formed.
