Tactical and psychological techniques used in the preliminary questioning of an identifier

The article describes tactical and psychological techniques used in questioning prior to line-up identification. Based on the analysis of criminal cases the investigation on which featured such investigation activity as line-up, the author suggests different tactical and psychological techniques used to actualize and revive the image of interest for the investigator, which has been perceived and recorded in the memory of the questioned subject. The author’s conclusion is that an investigator should conduct an additional questioning of the identifying subject immediately before the line-up. During questioning it is appropriate to acquaint the identifying subject with the descriptive portrait terminology and explain the meaning of the terms. Such questioning is aimed at helping the prospective identifier to recall the meaningful features and the peculiar characteristics of the object. The investigator also has a chance to conduct psychological preparation of the identifier for the participation in the investigative action.
