One of the urgent tasks in modern conditions is to conduct sound economic policies in an environment where the Western countries declared sanctions against Russia in the area of foreign economic relations. One of the most important and priority directions in this regard becomes balanced and reasonable customs policy. Against this background, it is expedient to follow particular realization of this direction in the past. The article describes one of the stages of development of the customs policy of Russia - during the reign of the successors of Peter I. Historical and law analysis shows that the most important event in the field of customs policy was trade and economic policy, which was successful, and certainly contributed to the development of Russia. This has contributed to the consolidation of capitalist relations in Russia.
