The paper is devoted to the historical development of dance improvisation since emergence of the free dance (I. Duncan) through the expressive dance (R. Laban, M. Wigman) and the modern dance (Ruth St. Denis) to the dance theater and postmodern dance. Choreographers introduced the ideal of pure, natural movements, which had their origin in creativity of a particular person. Development of improvisation is associated with such features of modern art as random, transient and fleeting.
