In the article the author combines memories of Professor Tatyana P. Korzhikhina, a well-known scholar, Doctor of History, teacher and archivist, who graduated from the Institute for History and Archives (now Russian State University for the Humanities) and then worked there for almost thirty years, with a review of her monograph “From Illegal Immigrants to Businessmen: An Essay on the Life and Work of Viktor P. Nogin.” Before starting her teaching career T.P. Korzhikhina worked at state archives, which gave her the opportunity to specify her research interests and experience in working with archival sources. She had over a hundred scientific publications, her last monograph being completed a few days before her death. Based entirely on archival documents, it is devoted to the biography of Viktor P. Nogin, a member of the first Soviet government, the People’s Commissar of Trade and Industry, which has not been sufficiently studied in Russian historiography. The book consistently examines the stages in the formation of Viktor P. Nogin as a participant in the revolutionary movement in Russia, his role in establishing the Soviet power in Moscow, his work in V.I. Lenin’s inner circle, his short stint in the first Soviet government, and his work in a textile syndicate, one of the largest ones at the time.
