A dungeon of the first part of the 11th c. from mediaeval Novgorod

The excavations conducted in Novgorod the Great at the Desyatinny 1excavation trench in the north-western part of the Lyudin konets (2008) have revealeda log cabin dated to 1041. The structure was located near the Volosova street eastwardfrom the Desyatinny monastery. The preserved underground part of the construction wasa pit 5 m in diameter and 3 m deep. Initially the walls were built of vertical planks over3 m long, up to 30 cm wide and up to 60 cm thick fixed to the vertical posts placed inthe corners of the construction. The structure was rebuilt in 1044. New log cabin measured2.30 to 2.40 m and was around 3.5 m high. On its bottom two wooden benches wereplaced. Clay-plastered floor was regularly cleaned, no cultural remains were discoveredon it. In the centre there was arranged a facility - a pit of oval shape 110 to 70 cm largeand 40 cm deep.
