Trends in small and medium-sized business development in the federal subjects of Russia

The article presents the concept of small and medium businesses (hereinafter referred to as SMEs), legislative criteria for classifying them as small and medium-sized businesses, and their importance for the country's economy. Based on statistical indicators, we have characterized the level of SMEs development in the Russian Federation by federal districts and subjects of Russia. An analysis of statistical data has shown the significant fluctuations in the level of small and medium-sized businesses development in the Russian Federation, as well as structural changes in the types of SMEs activities. As a result of the conducted assessment of SMEs development, it has been revealed that the most popular types of activities are trade, construction, rent and management of own or rented real estate, restaurant activities and food delivery services, software development. The article compares the most popular types of economic activities in the Russian Federation for 2020 and 2024, and have identifies current trends in small and medium-sized businesses development in the Russian Federation.
