Цицерон ( О природе богов 1.13.35), Климент Александрийский ( Протрептик 5.58) и Прокл (Комментарий к Тимею Платона 35А) примерно одинаковыми словами сообщают, что Теофраст [372-287 до н. э.] был склонен отождествлять бога и звездное небо («небеса одушевлены, а значит божественны»). И действительно, в обсуждаемом в выступлении сочинении о первой философии, преемник Аристотеля нередко высказывает идеи, не очень подходящие для ученика Стагирита. В частности, в ряде мест он настаивает на том, что космос - это живое и упорядоченное целое, а потому движение, присущее ему от природы, не следует пытаться объяснять при помощи различных телеологических конструкций и тем более постулировать независимый от него первый двигатель. Кроме собственно Метафизики во вступительной статье используются наблюдения, сделанные на основе изучения сирийской Метеорологии и естественно-научных фрагментов Теофраста. Трактат Теофраста Метафизика, публикуемый в данной публикации, ранее на русский язык не переводился.
