The article considers the system of theoretical and methodological features of competition as an economic category. The role of competition is revealed both in the system of economic knowledge and in economic and business systems. We provide insight into the functional approach to competition analysis and its practical importance in studying economic systems. Also, competition is considered as a function of management. The category "competition" serves as a dialectical link in the interaction between economics and science of organization. In the framework of the economic approach competition is seen as a phenomenon, and within the organizational approach as a process. Competition in the modern economic system has a number of functions. In the market it performs the function of auto-regulation, if there is no state participation, and the function of formation in other circumstances. In society as a whole competition performs two functions: self-regulation, if there is no government intervention, and developing function - in other cases.
