The article presents an analysis of the theories of exogenous development and the possibilities of applying their provisions to the development of regional policy of a modern state. The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of the provisions of the theory of stage-by-stage development, the theory of growth poles and the theory of "center-periphery", as well as the possibilities of applying their cognitive potential to develop tools for leveling interregional differences in the modern economy. It is concluded that understanding the limitations of exogenous regional development models gave rise to the development of theories of endogenous economic development.
