Problem and purpose. The emergence of new information challenges the traditional theory of muscle contraction, proposed in 1954. The incorrect approach to the pedagogical organization of the training process based on ignorance of the theory of muscle contraction led to a forced intensification of training, additional stimulation of the body to achieve its maximum potential and, as a result, international scandals and the removal of the Russian national team from the Olympic Games. The purpose of the article is to show the author’s approach to the theme of the theory of muscle contraction formation at the present stage and, on this basis, to improve the pedagogical process of training athletes. The research methodology consists in the study and analysis of research papers on the historical aspects of the theory of muscle contraction. Results. The article presents the historical aspects of the development of the theory of muscle contraction. The contradictions arising at different stages of its study are shown. A number of key scientific discoveries identifying the nature of the mechanism of muscle contraction are highlighted. A supposition is suggested about the fallacy of the contemporary idea of the basics of the muscular contraction apparatus. Conclusion. The author’s approach to rethinking the modern theory of muscle contraction is possible on the basis of new knowledge and the further expansion of the evidence base about the “error” of the traditional interpretation of muscle contraction mechanisms.
