The article deals with the role and tasks of such a method of knowledge assessment in the foreign language teaching as testing. The author analyzes the basic types, purposes and principles of testing used both in international exams assessing the level of foreign language proficiency and in the course of its study. The article describes existing types of foreign language testing: intake, formative, summative and assessment of the level of foreign language proficiency (linguistic).
