On September 25–27, 2014, members of the Department of Oriental Studies of Novosibirsk State University participated in the First Conference of European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology (EAAA) hosted by Palacký University in Olomouc (Czech Republic).
The Association was established to bring together both senior and young scholars, researchers, curators, and everyone who is interested in archaeology as well as art of Asia. After the constitutional meeting in Ljubljana (November 2012) and the following meeting in Münster (September 2013), this Association was officially registered in Ljubljana two months afterwards (November 2013). It is an international, non-profit, and non-political academic organization which gathers the scholars, the art historians, and the archaeologists from all of Europe and beyond.
The Olomouc conference attracted copious numbers of leading experts in archaeology, cultural studies, art studies, museology from different corners of the world including the United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, Italy, India, China, Korea, Russia, Finland, Czech Republic and others with total attendance exceeding one hundred people.
The round table «Transcultural Framings in Art History: Material, Display, Translation», nine panels, and ten thematic sessions were organized in the frame of the conference to comprise various aspects of art and archaeological studies of Asian countries. Among them were three panels («New Perspectives on Chinese Gardens», «Complex Negotiations: Subversion and Performativity in Contemporary Art Practice in Mainland China» and «New Approaches to Theory in Chinese Archae-ology») and seven thematic sessions («Chinese Bronzes», «Chinese Ceramics», «Ritual and Symbolic Objects in Ancient China», «Han Archaeology», «Western Arts in Qing China», «Chinese Painting» and «Contemporary Art in China») were dedicated to Chinese studies. The keynote speech «The Concept of Change in Chinese Material Culture» was delivered by Prof. Roderick Whitfield (University of London) touching upon the traditional culture of China and presenting the development of culture through concepts yi 易 (‘change’) jing 经 and wei 纬 (‘longitude and latitude’, ‘warp and weft’, ‘canon and apocrypha’).
During the Conference, the workshop «Approaching and Studying Chinese Art: My Own Ex-perience» ( 接触和学习中国美术--我的个人经历 ) was also provided. Four Chinese experts in art history, archaeology, museology, and architecture shared their experience in studying Chinese art as one of the ways of the proper conservation and protection of ideas and images, as ideological, social and political background, and even as the instrument of the struggle for survival.
Members of the Department of Oriental Studies of the Faculty of Humanities prof. E. Voytishek, M. Kudinova and A. Shmakova attended the conference and presented their reports too.
