The impact of the Olympic games 2014 on the economy of Russia

As specialists in economics, we can`t deny that the Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi have been not only a breathtaking event, but also a strategically realized plan of whole region elaboration, which is going to make a serious impact on the Russian economy.

Sochi is the city in Krasnodarskiy region, which is rated as an outpost, supporting stability in the southern boundaries of our country, in the Near East and Mediterranean. Krasnodarskiy region has the population about 5 000 000 people and it is the only Russian outlet to the Black sea and very important international trading ways. This transporting system operates about 35% of Russian exports. It is the leading region in the sphere of recreation and tourism, there is a specific climate here, which is very favourable for health. There are some great advantages in agricultural sector here too: many sowing areas that take about 4805 hectares.

But there were still some problems in this region. First of all, the basic problem here was the shortage of energy. In order to change the situation the new submerged cable was put on the bottom of the Black Sea. Preparation for the Olympics helped to solve the ecological problem of Sochi, which existed from the date of foundation of the city. Several wasting ranges were liquidated, new recycling factory was built and all the industrial discharges on the Black Sea were stopped.

The reconstruction of the railroad, several new road junctions and complex improvement of the transport system of the region will have a great impact on the further development of the Russian international trade and tourism.

And finally, more than half of all the buildings, which have been constructed for these Games, will be given by administration of Sochi to people, who have been living in obsolete houses before.

Russia has spent great sum of money on these Winter Olympic Games 2014, namely 50 billion dollars. In comparison with previous Olympic Games it seems strikingly unrealistic. But the money has not only been turned into objects of realty, but it, in its turn, will also stimulate the development of the region and the economy of Russia as a whole. The minister of economic development and trade of Russia, German Gref supposes that all these spendings will be recompensed in the next 10 years. What are the ways of such compensation? They are the following:

• - Selling the right of television broadcasting;

• - Tax revenues from exploitation of sport buildings, constructions and equipments after the Games;

• - Increase in tourism will raise extra money for Russian GDP;

• - Investment climate of Russia is now rated higher;

  -The role of the Russian Federation in international area has improved very much.

All these points explain the strategical motivation of such global sporting events. Now it is obvious that it is not only a breathtaking holiday for millions of people, but also a plan of complete modernization of the whole region, which has a great impact on the economy of Russia.

Индекс развития человеческого потенциала является интеграционным индексом из ряда факторов, на основе которых он состоит. Список стран по индексу развития человеческого потенциала включён в «Отчёт о развитии человеческого потенциала 2014» из Программы развития ООН, составленный на основе оценочных данных 2013 года и опубликованный 24 июля 2014 г.
