The article is devoted to the journalist, political and zemstvo figure of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, Tikhon Ivanovich Polner. On the basis of unknown documents stored in the Archive fund of the Russian Academy of Sciences, his biography before the emigrant period is considered. From Polner's multi - genre heritage, a part that is not typical for a public figure is singled out-travel notes written in 1907 during his sabbatical in Norway. On the basis of this material, Polner's formation as an author of travel essays, which became widespread in the journalism of the subsequent period, is shown.
