This work is devoted to the analysis of the small prose of V.M. Shukshin and classification according to different types of the characters presented by the author in his novels. All known typologies one way or another affect most characters, however, based on different characteristics, have common ground: character of rural life; the character of urban life; the character»I» as a separate type, not included in the first named. Each of the types is distinguished not just by the character of an honest worker, attachment to the workplace, but by the specifics of this workplace: a driver, a blacksmith, the Chairman of the collective farm, taking a direct part in the life of the collective farm; work, leisure. Summarizing the characters into a single typology, the authors take into account various factors: the phenomenon of Shukshin in Russian culture, a variety of approaches to the study of his work, the ability to compare Shukshin's prose with the prose of other writers
