The first section of this article deals with 1 Corinthians 11:10 in the immediate context (1 Cor. 11:7-15), and also analyzes the interpretation of the key words of the apostle Paul - ἐξουσίαν and διὰ τοὺς ἀγγέλους - by the holy fathers and teachers of the Church. Te direct connection between the words of the Apostle and Genesis 6:1-4 was stressed by Tertullian, insisting on the semantic correspondence of γυνή with femina, and not mulier. In connection with this, the second section analyzes the Jewish understanding of Gen. 6:1-4 based on examples from the writings of the intertestamental period, Philo of Alexandria and Josephus, as well as the Targums and the Talmud, in order to establish the context of the writing of the First Epistle to the Corinthians. In addition, the Peshita is also taken into account. Philological analysis of the original texts of the first and second sections of this article lead to the conclusion that the apostle Paul knew two opposite points of view on the definition of the sons of God in Gen. 6:1-4. Te Apostle himself, apparently, did not believe that the sons of God are angels. Te patristic interpretation sheds light on why and when women should cover their heads.
