Toponyms in the names of team and individual sports (based on English and German)

This study is devoted to lexical and etymological analysis of toponyms in the names of team and individual sports based on the English and German languages. The author gives definitions to the notions of toponym, individual sports and team sports. The paper presents a thematic classification of toponyms in the names of team sports such as football and individual sports like wrestling and jogging. As a result of the lexical and etymological analysis, the author comes to conclusion that the names of team and individual sports include toponyms are choronyms (names of countries, counties, large areas, geographical, economic, historical ones). Toponyms in the names of team and individual sports contain information about geographical objects (countries, counties), which they originate from and convey diverse information through centuries. The results of the research can be used during compiling mono- and bilingual onomastic dictionaries, in developing courses and special courses on onomastics, toponymics.
