Traditoin and novations in lexical and grammatical system of the Karelian language

The article covers the formation of the Karelian script tradition. The article deals with the main stages of the Karelian script development from the first half of the 19th century to the present. Significant changes that the Karelian language underwent in its transition from oral dialect forms to codified written forms are regarded. The strata and growth rate of the lexical fund of the Karelian language are determined. Special attention is paid to the origin of the modern lexicon, its formation and use in speech. The trends of modern word formation are considered and the processes of semantic and derivation development of lexical units are presented. The authors analysed some aspects of the Case System of the Karelian language determined by the historical changes of its grammar.
