The Russian Federation ranks among the world's leaders in natural resource reserves, which has undoubtedly influenced the raw materials-based nature of our economy, with the oil and gas sector dominating. The current geography of hydrocarbon production in Russia was established in the late Soviet era, with the exception of new fields in the east of the country. Oil production occurs in 34 regions of Russia, but is primarily concentrated in Western Siberia and the Ural-Volga region. However, the oil industry is gradually shifting north, as hydrocarbon production here has only recently become technically and economically feasible. However, the remoteness of these regions and the harsh climate complicate both the development and transportation of these resources. Therefore, it is clear that today there is a need to create a unified transportation system and improve its infrastructure. The development of new and modernization of existing transportation routes will also contribute to improving living conditions for the local population and addressing many social issues. The Northern Sea Route is such a project, designed to radically change the transport and logistics system in the country and globally. The purpose of this work was to study the development of the Northern Sea Route, as well as the existing and projected cargo base for this project.
