This article examines the transformation of women’s roles in Yakut policy and culture ‒ from archaic matriarchal elements in traditional society to contemporary models of female political leadership. Employing an interdisciplinary approach combining historical, cultural, and political analysis, the study explores the evolution of gender perceptions and practices in Yakutia. Particular attention is paid to three key aspects: the archetypes of female characters in the Olonkho epic and their connection to social roles in traditional society, the historical dynamics of gender relations during modernization, and the contemporary strategies of female politicians in the face of persistent patriarchal barriers. Through case studies of successful female politicians, various models for overcoming gender constraints are identified. The findings reveal a persistent duality in the perception of women’s roles, merging traditional notions of women’s sacred status with modern practices of political leadership. This research is relevant to scholars in gender studies, political anthropology, and sociocultural studies of northern regions.
