A myth about a writer serves as an important component of culture, because it gives the opportunity for its creators to stay in the process of constant dialogue. The basis of the Gogol myth is the mythologemes of his “biographical legend”, related to important events from his life. The functioning of the Gogol myth in the literary world of the XX-XXI centuries is determined by the two opposing tendencies: active interpretation of the myth and demythologizing. These trends can be clearly seen in the story “Gogol's Head” by A. Korolyov. The author’s myth, created by A. Korolyov in the story, correlates with the Gogol myth rooted in mass consciousness. However, A. Korolev's story not only interprets, but also creates the Gogol myth, giving it new meanings.
