The study discusses the main reasons for transforming the social status of post-nonclassical science in modern society and analyzes the impact of these changes on social legitimation of scientific knowledge. The author presents different researchers’ viewpoints on the modifications in this field. The study predicts the social role of science and describes the possibilities of its legitimation. The criticism of science and the spread of anti-scientist sentiments make it possible to conclude that modern society needs to change its development priorities and adjust social and technological projects accordingly. The author substantiates the fact that both science functioning in society today and the specific nature of this society have given rise to a crisis of legitimation of scientific knowledge. It emphasizes the need for fundamental changes related to its greening, humanitarization and the achievement of social consensus leading to successful legitimation.
