The changes which affected former socialist countries of Eastern Europe are hard to interpret solely based on existing experience and known theories of social change. A number of different types of changes have intertwined, complemented and even counteracted resulting in yet undefined and unclear direction for those countries in transition. The very term 'transition' is debatable. The changes in Eastern Europe have marked the end of socialism, but they haven't created the necessary conditions for establishing a stable and prosperous economy and multi-party democracy. By giving the general state of affairs in both political and economic spheres in almost all countries in transition, one could ask two questions: Isn't the mass impoverishment a ticking time bomb in the society and who will take control over its detonator - the new Right or the new Left.
