He paper discusses reception of Rimbaud’s works in the USSR in the 1930s - early 1940s. Comparing different translations of Rimbaud’s works and analyzing criticism of the French poet published in “Internatsionalnaia Literatura”, it demonstrates how the attitude towards Rimbaud changed gradually as well as interpretation of the key terms of the Soviet literary criticism. Thus at the time ‘realism’ was applied to Rimbaud, Joyce and other authors later to be excluded from the notion. Through analysis of the publications of the early 1940s the author come to the conclusion that there was gradually formed an image of the “Soviet Rimbaud’ and created a specific academic discourse that made it possible to publish authors whose aesthetics were not in line with the Soviet criteria, even under the ideological pressure.
