The official printed organ of the ancient Kiev diocese, the Kiev Diocesan Gazette, covered church life from 1861 to 1918. The pages of this periodical published articles devoted, among other things, to church singing issues. Of particular interest are materials concerning the participation of clergy and church ministers in organizing and developing church singing activities in their parishes. This article examines the contribution of Saints Philaret (Amphiteatrov) and Sylvester (Malevansky), Metropolitan Eugene (Bolkhovitinov) and other bishops to the development of church singing. Special attention is paid to the church singing works of venerable diocesan archpriests, rural clergy, psalm-readers, teachers of church schools and choir directors.
