The article presents an etymological analysis of principle terms selected by Hegel to describe the main forms of madness. Introducing the speculative principle of mental disorders classification, the German thinker rejects the principle of division traditionally used in the empirical science. Therefore, there is a need in an etymological and conceptual analysis of the thesaurus chosen by the philosopher. The analysis presented in the article reveals a certain discrepancy between the etymological and conceptual meanings in both names chosen by Hegel and their analogues in Russian translations.
