The aim of this study was to elucidate influence of long-term therapy by verapamil on endothelial function in hypertensive patients and possible relationship between improvement of endothelial function and dynamic of early brain injury. We studied 26 hypertensive pts without neurological deficit (10 men, aged 30 to 60 y.o.). Following parameters were estimated: 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, brain MRI, flow-mediated vasodilation of the brachial artery and vasomotor reactivity of middle cerebral artery, plasma levels of the lipids and basal postprandial glucose. All parameters were estimated before and after 6-month therapy with verapamil. Our data demonstrate that antihypertensive therapy by verapamil in hypertensive pts had positive effect on endothelial function and early bran injury that related to the improvement of endothelial function.
