The paper discusses the problem of illuminating towns of Russia and other countries located in polar regions during polar night using large-surface reflectors placed in Earth orbit. An algorithm has been developed for controlling parameters of sunsynchronous orbits using the force of the Sun light pressure acting on the reflector. The proposed method makes it possible to keep the parameters close to preset values. Considering that the control agent here is the light pressure force, the satellite orbit controlling is effected without consumption of propellant, which is an expensive and limited resource onboard a spacecraft. As a result, the use of a solar sail allows extending satellite life. The paper also arrives at a conclusion that the selected solar sail surface area is insufficient for changing orbital parameters on a regular basis, and can only be used for their adjustment.
