The article reveals the necessity for orienteering training in physical education program of cadets, as while performing combat tasks each service member has to get geographical bearings quickly and correctly and assess its tactical properties. Orienteering training for military specialists involves the development of the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities in physical training, military topography, psychology and tactics. For the implementation of these tasks, each student must learn how to fulfill such tactical and technical requirements as the choice of the movement option, reading the map in motion, the ability to handle the compass, and others. To experimentally substantiate the increase of orienteering training the first-year and the second-year students were involved in testing of the training program. The analysis of the results of testing has led to the conclusion that the program for orienteering has great significance. Having mastered the skills of orienteering, the students improved their results in physical training, map reading in a combat situation, overcoming obstacles and evaluation of the tactical terrain features. Consequently, the richer the experience is and the more time is given to training, the less time is required for military specialists to achieve high results in orientation.
