The article reviews the conditions for the emergence of adaptive control of an enterprise in the aspect of a scientific approach to the nature of this type of control. There is a need for adaptive control in the context of the dynamic changes in the life of Russian society which are characterized by innovative nature, a decrease in mass production and an increase in small-scale and single-item production. The study substantiates the significance of the continuous adaptation of enterprises to external environmental factors. It means the process of dynamic changes in any production properties and (or) parameters associated with the adaptation of the enterprise to production conditions and environmental factors through the reconciliation of economic needs. It is concluded that the process of adaptation is due to the fact that the rate of changes in external factors tends to be lower than the development indicators of the enterprise. Adaptation inevitably leads to the increase in universal control.
