After analyzing the failures of mechanical seals, it was found that the main reason for their failure is pumped aggressive water with a large number of mechanical impurities and salts, which is partially passed by the mechanical seal. These impurities contribute to the accumulation of solid deposits in the inner cavity of the body of the mechanical seal, which leads to loss of mobility of the mechanical seal in the axial direction and creates prerequisites for excessive axial force on the contact rings at the start and stop of the pumping units, and, as a consequence, to the mechanical destruction of the contact rings. The solution is to ensure continuous flushing of the mechanical seal cavity.
