The author of the article refers to the phenomena of literature and cinema associated with the genre of horror. The material for considering the topic is the work of Nikolay Gogol and his cinematic versions. This is no coincidence, since Gogol is characterized by an interest in the category of the terrible, which is noticeable in different periods of the writer's work. Among the types of horror present in his texts are cosmic, social, existential horror. So, in the collection “The Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”, there is a supernatural horror, recreated through folklore images. In later work, a city appears, which implies a greater sociality of the works. The existential horror is added to the social and supernatural horror, depicted through the figure of Thomas Brutus. The article is divided by the author into several parts: first, a general idea of the category of horror in Gogol is given; secondly, there is a characteristic of Gogol's horror, recreated through cinema. An important issue in the article is the question of the relationship between the language means used and the period of creation of a particular screen version (historical-functional method). Indeed, in comparison with literature, cinema visualizes the literary text, which gives certain advantages. Among these advantages are the special expressiveness inherent in cinematographic art, the presence of movement, the use of various kinds of technologies that provide visibility.
