V. A. Gorodtsov as a representative of the Moscow archaeological school of the pre-revolutionary period

The paper looks into the development history of the Moscow and St. Petersburgschools of archaeology in the pre-revolutionary period. The analysis of V. A. Gorodtsov'sand A. A. Spitsyn's lecture courses reveals distinctive features of world outlook, researchmethods and principles characterizing these research schools and demonstrates differentapproaches of the two scientists to objectives and tasks of archaeology, its place in thesystem of natural science and history. The paper notes that some of the features typicalfor these schools of archaeology coincide with specific features of the Moscow andSt. Petersburg schools of history.
