The article examines the specifics of the visual turn in twentieth century studies in comparison with the linguistic turn. Against the background of the predominance of images in modern culture, the linguistic turn in philosophy is replaced by a visual turn. Philosophers and art historians are beginning to talk about the need to liberate the image from the power of discourse, about the return of trust in sensory experience and perception of reality. Attempts are being made to identify the role of the image in art, as well as beyond it, in other forms of artistic practice. But first of all, the visual turn begins with raising the question of the role of image and visuality in European art against the background of the spread of new information technologies that have radically changed the cultural space and pushed the study of the visual image. Thus, the visual turn is considered as a multidimensional cultural phenomenon that highlights the importance of visual imagery and sensory experience in various cultural practices, it is the search for a new reading not only of art, but also the search for a new vision of the modern manmade world and an attempt to problematize it.
