Nowadays, modern figures of Japanese art continue, like their ancestors, to draw inspiration from folklore and mythology. In many contemporary works, plots are traced, both from Shintoism and from Buddhism. This article presents the chronological features of the development of Japanese sculpture, the stylistic features of each historical period. The research of this article is aimed at identifying the characteristic features in Japanese sculpture from the Neolithic, Middle Ages, the period of adoption of Buddhism, ending with modernity. This time span allowed us to determine the influence of Buddhism on the sculpture of Japan. The change of eras paved the way for a new style that is relevant in our days among designers around the world.
