The impact of the number of social media subscriptions on user self-esteem: The mediating role of social comparison
The article presents the results of an empirical study aimed at verifying the hypothesis about the determination of users' self-esteem by the number of their subscriptions in social networks. The study is based on a survey of 200 respondents. The methodological basis was a set of multivariate statistical analysis methods: factor analysis to identify latent constructs that affect self-esteem, as well as a series of cluster analyzes (two-step, hierarchical and k-means) to test the hypothesis at the level of identifying typological groups of users and the structure of relationships between variables. The results of factor analysis refuted the direct relationship between the number of subscriptions and self-esteem, revealing the emotionally evaluative attitude to content as a key factor. At the same time, cluster analysis showed that the number of subscriptions is a significant behavioral marker that allows to identify a group of "vulnerable users", which is characterized by a close relationship between active content consumption, intense social comparison and low self-esteem. Thus, the hypothesis is confirmed indirectly: the number of subscriptions is not a direct determinant, but a critically important element of the behavioral pattern that triggers a complex of psychological mechanisms leading to a decrease in self-esteem.
