Influence of alcohol dependence promotion on suicidological characteristics of patients

Aim. The work is devoted to the study of the influence of alcohol dependence on the suicidological characteristics of patients. Materials and methods: A group of respondents with a high-degree of alcohol dependence was investigated (n=62). As the comparison group, respondents with an average degree of alcohol dependence were studied (n=72). Results: The results of the study convincingly demonstrate that respondents of the study group have a higher suicidal potential. Suicidal attempts in the anamnesis were found in 61.3% of patients compared to 15.3% in the control group. Suicidal thoughts were detected in 71.0% of respondents who suffer from highly-dependent alcohol dependence. In a group with moderate progredness, suicidal thoughts occurred in 15.3% of the respondents. Also, the study group is characterized by a high incidence of depressive episodes (64.5% versus 20.83% in the control group ). Conclusions: The findings suggest that respondents with a high degree of progredness of alcohol dependence are a very specific group in the suicidal plan and need special preventive and postural measures.
