Effect of metformin therapy on myocardial condition and frequency of the paroxysms in patients with metabolic syndrome and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

The study included 60 patients with metabolic syndrome in association with paroxysmal form of atrial fibrillation. Patients were randomized into two groups: group 1 (main group) included 30 individuals with metabolic syndrome and atrial fibrillation in past medical history who underwent preventive treatment with a combination of perindopril 2 mg + indapamid 625 mg once a day and metformin 1000 mg twice a day; group 2 (comparison group) consisted of 30 patients with metabolic syndrome and atrial fibrillation in past medical history who received a combination of perindopril 2 mg + indapamid 625 mg once a day. The study showed that the use of combination treatment with metformin significantly improved the electrcardiographic and echocardiographic parameters and increased the quality of life in patients of the main group.
