Foreign Trade of North African Countries and Russian Foreign Trade Interests in the Region in the XIX Century

The article is devoted to the problems of the development of foreign trade relations of the countries of North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt) during the 19th century, as well as the analysis of the foreign trade interests of the Russian Empire in this region of the world. The author studies the peculiarities of foreign trade of North African countries, the structure of exports and imports, the geography of foreign trade relations, trade volumes, etc. It is emphasized that the attention of Russian entrepreneurs to the North American market increased towards the end of the 19th century. The article provides data on foreign trade centers in North Africa, information on maritime and caravan trade, as well as information on the region’s connections with other trade centers in sub-Saharan Africa during the period under review. Special attention is paid to the assessment of the importance of the North African market in the works of Russian travellers and researchers. The article contains a rich statistical material characterizing the foreign trade relations of the countries of North Africa during the 19th century. It is based on archival documents, as well as rare pre-revolutionary publications in Russian, English, French, Italian and Spanish.
