Internal contradictions in the value system as prerequisites for emotional distress of the individual

The article presents the results of an empirical study of the relationship between internal contradictions in the value system and indicators of an individual's emotional well-being (proneness to conflict, experience of depression, subjective well-being). The study involved 97 people aged 22 to 39. The following were used: the KVS-2 personal values diagnostic technique (D.V. Kashirskiy), the “Subjective Assessment of Interpersonal Relationships” conflict behavior questionnaire (S.V. Dukhnovsky), the depression scale (A. Beck), and the subjective well-being scale (E. Diener); statistical methods: Spearman's correlation coefficient, Kruskal-Wallace analysis of variance. The study confirmed the hypothesis that the integral index of internal contradictions in the system of respondents' personal values positively correlates with the indicator of proneness to conflict in interpersonal relationships and the level of depression, and negatively with the indicator of an individual's subjective well-being. It has been proven that internal contradictions in the value system statistically significantly differ in the groups of respondents with no depression, subdepression, and severe depression. It is noted that the most effective method of working with ineffective patterns of behavior and negative attitudes today is cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. It is concluded that psychotherapeutic assistance should be built taking into account the degree of emotional distress of the individual, be aimed at preventing the development of clinical forms of depression or helping a person to combat depressive disorder of a clinical nature.
