In the article on the basis of a wide range of archival materials a socio-cultural portrait of the Transbaikalian military governorship of the II half of the XIXth - early XXth centuries is presented. The author on the basis of analysis of the track records reveals the peculiarities of the region’s governorship formation. He considers education, financial position of the «Chief» Trans-baikalia. The article presents the main activities of the supreme administration of the region. After analyzing the available official lists of the military governors of Transbaikalian region, the author comes to the conclusion that they were a bulwark of the autocracy in the east of the country, were representatives of European culture, «educators» of society, as intermediaries between the periphery and the supreme authority of the empire.
